The following is under construction: Charles Edward and Rose Bell (McCARTY) MORRIS settled on Section 12, Northwest quarter, Twp. 137, Range 100, in 1906. They had been married in Iowa, and two children were born to them in that state, Mildred Lucille, born February 21, 1904, and Charles Millard, born in November, 1905. An interesting side-note is that Charlie and Lucille were both born in the same house as their mother Rose was born. Charles MORRIS, born April 19, 1878, in Clinton County, East Fork Township, Illinois, was the son of John Wesley and Martha Ann (TABOR) MORRIS. John Wesley MORRIS was the son of John and Sarah Jane (WRIGHT) MORRIS. Zachariah MORRIS, grandfather of John Wesley MORRIS, came to Clinton County, Illinois in 1813, from Georgia via St. Clair County, Illinois. About 1909, Rose Bell (McCARTY) MORRIS taught in a rural school to augment the family income, and Charles MORRIS opened up the first barber shop in Belfield. Later, he traveled for the Oliver Typewriter Company. He had a mechanical knowledge and ability to not only sell, but repair, the business machines which were coming into widespread use. Later, he started selling the first permanent wave machines on the market, and Jimmy LONG in Dickinson was one of the first to purchase a machine in the area. |
