Bannister William Vaughn

Bannister William Vaughn, son of Lucy LeGrand and William Vaughn, was born about 1796 in Halifax, County, Virginia.Bannister died on November 3, 1858 in Boone County, Missouri.

Martha Wilson

Martha Wilson, daughter of Ailsey and Peter Wilson, [S8, S9, S2, N5] was born on May 28, 1801 in Halifax County, Virginia. [S4, N6]. Other sources report that Martha was the daughter of William Wilson and Catherine Jett Hardwick. {BK158, MN-510] Martha died on August 6, 1881 in Boone County, Missouri. [S4,S2,N7].

Martha Wilson and Banister Vaughan Marriage

Bannister Vaughn married Martha Wilson on October 5, 1818 in Halifax County, Virginia. [S7, S4, S3, N4].

A bond for the marriage of she and Banister W. Vaughn, son of William Vaughan and Lucy LeGrand, was signed on 5 October 1818 in Halifax County; bondsmen were Banister Vaughn and [her uncle] Aaron Hardwick. The document was witnessed by William Vaughan and W.B. Easley. William Wilson consented to the marriage of his daughter Martha Wilson to Banister Vaughan.[S54,S55]


The Vaughan-Vaughn Web Page, {REF MN-506}, reports that the young family was enumerated at #70, Maresville in the 1820 US Census of Halifax County, Virginia.

On 29 October 1839 Banister and Martha Vaughn sold land in Halifax County, Virginia, on Birch Creek to Martha Hymes.[S58] He purchased land in 1839 in Boone County, Missouri, in sections 30 and 31.[S48] He and Martha appeared on the census of 1840 in Boone County.[S59] On 23 February 1847 + Banister W. Vaughn sold land in Halifax County, Virginia, to Robert F. Lawson, Atty.[S58]

The family immigrated West in 1843 to Boone County, Missouri. [S10]. Records from the US General Land Office, Missouri Deeds provide records, Certificates 21,480 and 22,033, for two Bannister W. Vaughan purchases of Federal lands on April 1, 1843 in Callaway County, Missouri.

Banister and Martha Vaughn appeared on the census of 1850 in Being 8th District, Boone County, Missouri, page 446: Banister Vaughn head of household (age 54, born in Virginia), farmer. Enumerated with wife Martha (age 50, born in Virginia), children John (age 24, born in Virginia), farmer; Sandy (age 20, born in Virginia), farmer; Marcellus (age 12, born in Virginia), and Lucy C. (age 7, born in Missouri) Vaughn.[S86,S87]

Certificates 28,918 and 33,613, of the US General Land Office, Missouri Deeds records Bannister buying more Federal lands in Boone and Callaway Counties respectively, on January 15, 1856.

(The following note from GED-156 with sources noted as [Sxx] ) After the death of Bannister, Martha and her children appear on the census of 1860 in Cedar Township, Boone County, Missouri: Martha Vaughn head of household (age 60, born in Virginia). Enumerated with Archibald (age 30, born in Virginia), Emeriva (age 8, born in Missouri), and Elia (age 4, born in Missouri) Vaughn.[S88] (Boone County, Missouri, 1860 census, #393, page 26)

In 1880, the family is enumerated in Cedar Township, Boone County, Missouri. [S11].

Children of Martha and Bannister Vaughan

Martha and Bannister had the following children:

"Sallie" Sarah L. Vaughn

"Sallie" Sarah L. Vaughn was born about 1819 or 1820 in Halifax County, Virginia. Sallie married Hiram Wright. Sallie died in 1894 and was buried in Dry Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Guthrie, Callaway County, Missouri. A memorial page with a photo of her grave marker is found on the Find-A-Grave website.

William Wilson Vaughan

William Wilson Vaughan was born January 21, 1822. William died in the Civil War battle at Corinth Mississippi.

James H. Vaughan

James H. Vaughan was born September 1823. John married Amanda Ann Burnett about 1848. John and Amanda were enumerated in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Census of Cedar Township, Boone County, Missouri. John died on September, 16 1883. A GED-156 note states: “He died on 16 September 1883 in Audrain County, Missouri, accidentally shot by his son on the family farm.[S31]”

John Hampton

John Hampton Vaughan was born about 1826.

Alexander "Sandy" Vaughn

Alexander "Sandy" Vaughn was born on January 20, 1830 in Halifax County, Virginia. On November 7, 1850, he married Elizabeth Martha Bullard, daughter of Parmelia Barger and John M Bullard. Sandy died on March 2, 1904 in New Bloomfield, Callaway County, Missouri. Sandy was buried in Dry Fork Baptist Church Cemetery, Guthrie, Callaway County. Archibald F. "Archie" Vaughn

Archibald F. "Archie" Vaughan was born about 1830.

Marcellus Smith Vaughan

Marcellus Smith Vaughan was born on April 30, 1837.

Lucy Catherine Vaughan

Lucy Catherine Vaughan was born in 1844.

Tilman Vaughan

Tilman Vaughn was born after 1844.

The Estate of Banister W. Vaughn

(Notes from GED-156 with sources relative to GED-156) His heirs were Sarah Wright wife of Hiram Wright, and William W. Vaughn who reside in Callaway County, Missouri: James, John, Archibald, Sandy, Marcellus, and Lucy Catherine Vaughn, all of whom reside in Boone County, Missouri. According to the Boone County probate record and inventory, at the time of his death he owned thirty slaves. They were: men, Jack ($1200), Sam ($1100), Charles, ($1200), Stephen ($1200), Joe ($1200), Bob ($1000); boys, Fil ($800), Elija ($800), Ben ($600), Henry ($500), Willis ($400), Abram ($300), Smith ($300); women, Manah ($500), Ann ($500), Peggy ($700), Mary and child ($900), child of Mary Lucinda ($200), woman Amy and child Ciley Ann ($1000), Palina ($900), Lizza ($300); girls, Alsy ($500), Nancy ($500), Milly ($500), Jane ($250), Margaret ($150); woman Fanny and 2 children ($100), Lucy ($5), and man Lewis ($5). The executor was his son William Vaughn.

Your Petitioners Martha Vaughn, Sarah Wright, William Vaughn, James Vaughn, John Vaughn, Archabald Vaughn, Sandy Vaughn, John Ellis guardian for Lucy Catherine Vaughn and Martha E. Vaughn, John Yount guardian for John M. Vaughn, respectfully represents that Banister W. Vaughan, late of Boone County who departed this life on or about the 3rd day of November 1858, was the owner and possessed at the time of his death of the following described slaves: Jack, about 21 years old, Sam, about 35 years old, Charles, about 20 years old, Stephen aged about 30 years, Joe, aged about 19 years, Bob about 39 years, Jill, about 15 years, Eliza about 13 years, Ben about 11 years, Henry about 9 years, Smith about 5 years, Mariah, about 45 years, Mary about 23 years, Lucinda about 3 years, Amy about 22 and her child Cecly Ann about one year, Palina about 20 years, Lizzy about 23, Alsy about 14 years, Nancy about 11 years, Milly about 10 years, Lewis about 65 years, Lucy about 65 years, Jane about 4 years, Margaret about 1 year, Fanny about 20 years and George Thomas about 4 months old. Martha Vaughn the widow is entitled to the one third part as her dower for life and the said Sarah Wright, William Vaughn, James Vaughn, John Vaughn, Archabald Vaughn, Sandy Vaughn, John Ellis guardian for Lucy Catherine Vaughn are each entitled to the undivided eighth of two thirds thereof. We further state that we are the heirs and legal representatives and the only heirs of the said Banister W. Vaughn, deceased. John Yount guardian for John M. Vaughn and Martha E. Vaughn, widow of Marcullus Vaughn, deceased, are entitled to the one eighth of two thirds of said slaves or one share. We therefore ask for commissioners to be appointed to set off dower to the widow, and to make partition agreeable to the rights of the parties according to their respective rights. Your petitioners will ever pray Sarah Right, William W. Vaughan, James H. Vaughan, John H. Vaughan, Archable F. Vaughan, Sandy Vaughan, John Ellis guardian for Lucy Catherine Vaughan, John Yount guardian for John M. Vaughn, Martha E. Vaughn.[S31]

Martha died on 6 August 1881 in Cedar Township, Boone County, Missouri, at age 80.

Obituary from The Columbia Statesman, 19 August 1881: "Died at her residence in Cedar Township, Boone County, Missouri, August 6, 1881, Mrs. Martha Vaughn, aged 81 years."[S85] On 29 October 1839 Banister and Martha Vaughn sold land in Halifax County, Virginia, on Birch Creek to Martha Hymes.[S58] Martha was widowed at the death of her husband Banister Vaughn on 3 November 1858.
