"Betty's Life Comedy", unpublished autobiography of Betty Brightwell Fain, 1996, Roaming Shores, Ashtabula, Ohio
"How many times had I been in contact with Alfred Fain in the two years since high school graduation? Not many. We corresponded some, but not a great deal. In about May or June of 1943 he called me long distance and asked "How well do you like me? Well enough to marry me?" It was a bit of a surprise, but I must have answered in the affirmative. Without telling any of my folks, I began making plans to go join him in California. He sent me a train ticket for my first long train ride.
The destination was Hayward, CA. After arriving in Oakland, I was able to take a public transportation to Hayward where his mother lived. He took a few days leave from where he was stationed in Blythe, CA. We were married in July 9, 1943, standing in his mother's living room. His brother John, a church pastor, officiated. Present were his mom and step-dad, his sister Virginia and her husband Louie, younger brother Joel, youngest sister Thelma, as well as a cousin Thelma, and John's wife Alberta. It was a small living room - filled to capacity".
