- ↑ This marriage is indexed in two collections from two sources giving conflicting information. The indices are nominally correct representations of their respective underlying records.
First is this one listing the marriage as 18 May 1873 in Manhattan to Mary A Thorp, father Patrick Keating. This cites image 367 of film 1671678: "Register of marriages, New York City, 1829-1887", "Registers, v. 17 (P pt.-Z) 1872 Registers, v. 18-19 1873-1874 Registers, v. 20 1876-Aug 1877" [original record of marriage here (viewable at Family History Centers)]. Although this record is entered on a page with a pre-printed column heading of "Date of Marriage 1873", it comes from a volume entitled "VOL. 19 1874: Dec. - Dec." [title page here ], so it appears that the date of marriage should actually be 1874, though no explicit indication of that is found on this one page.
The second is here listing the marriage as 18 May 1874 in Manhattan to Mary Thorp, father Pat. Hating (Hatting?). This cites film 1562046: "Manhattan (New York City) marriage records, 1866-1937", "Certificates no. 2715-3540 1874" [original certificate of marriage here here and return here (viewable at Family History Centers)]. The return of marriage would appear to be the ultimate source for all the information. It says 1874 which appears to confirm the above analysis. The father's name appears to be "Pat. YEating", i.e, a capital E (looking like a backwards '3') following the Y? It is written with some fourishes, so apparently was read one time as Keating, one time as Hating, not without justification.
It appears from these records that Mary was born about 1841 or 1842 in England. It is not known if Mary's first marriage to Mr. Thorp was in England or the United States. Some vague candidates have been found, but nothing conclusive.
