Why, in this category, is Grey [County] placed under "G" and the other two counties, Northumberland and Durham, under "S" for Source? --goldenoldie 06:45, 14 February 2013 (EST)

When the Category is referenced on a census source page, if the county name is included after the pipe symbol (in the sort code section,) then the county will be placed under the alphabetical section based upon the first letter. Otherwise, it will be included under "S" for source.

The Wiki standard is NOT to include the sort code for counties. This is inconsistent with similar usage for cemeteries. However, it would be a huge job to go back to edit all U.S. counties for all years, so they continue recommending this.

For Canada, it is a smaller job, and not a lot have been created yet, so, in theory we could use the sort code. I would prefer to do this, and probably have been inconsistent in my application of this rule as I create Census source records.
