There are many Jeremiah Pearsons living in and around Newbury, Mass. This is a worksheet attempting to attribute children, primarily, but to distinguish the various Jeremiahs generally. [edit] From Vital Records[edit] Births

[edit] ProbateAmericanAncestors.org has Essex probate files online. No probate found that could clearly be identified as widows of these men and only the Mary mentioned in case 20980 was even thought to be one of the widows. [edit] Case 20978: Pearson, Jeremiah 1737, Mch. 21.[This is the husband of Priscilla Hazen] Will of "Jerimiah pearson of Newbury", dated 19 Mar "on[e] thousand seven hundred Thirty and or thirty on[e]", proved 21 Mar 1736[/37], names wife prisilia; son John Person [executor] "he paing Each of my children", daughter priscilla the wife of Nathan'll mihill, son Jeremiah person, son Moses Person, son Amos Person, children of my dafter hibcabath [?] knight which sd daughter is decased, daughter miriam the wife of Ebenezer burpe [?], daughter hannah the wife of John Down. [edit] Case 20980 Pearson, Jeremiah, joiner, 1768, Feb. 23[This is B1/D2. If this is the father of B6 (since father of B5 who also had wife Mary apparently died 1759), then B6 died young, because the will only mentions wife Mary. But it is unlikely that this couple married in 1726 would have a child in 1750, so the parents of B5 are probably some other couple. Since childless, his wife Mary is probably the probate file of 1774 (21011) who leaves her estate to niece Sarah Dole, wife of Daniel Dole.] 23 Feb 1768: Bond of Mary Person Wid'o of Newbury Port, Dan'l Dole and Ebenez'r Sumner as sureties, as executor of Jeremiah Pearson late of New'by Port in the County of Essex Joyner deceased. [edit] Case 20981 Pearson, Jeremiah Junr., mariner, 1784, May 31.[Apparently no children. This is M6. Would appears to NOT be B6 since not mentioned in case 29080, but could possibly be son of 29082 since predeceased him with no heirs.] Will of "Jeremiah Pearson jun'r of the Town of Newbury Port, in New England, Mariner", dated 2 Dec 1777, proved 31 May 1784, bequeaths entire estate to wife Abigail [executrix]. 16 Jul 1784 Inventory, £496.16.6. [edit] Case 20982 Pearson, Jeremiah (Elder) tailor 1798. Jan. 2[Apparently only the two children. Clearly not the Jeremiah of Rowley who had several other children. Websites says this is B2.] Will of "Jeremiah Pearson of Newbury Port", dated 27 Feb 1795, proved 2 Jan 1798, mentions wife Elizebath; son Isaac Green Pearson, daughter Hannah Johnson. [edit] Case 20992 Pearson, John 1781, Mch. 6[The following will is significant because it names the two grandsons, and mentions their mother still living. Her marriage record shows the son was thought to have died much earlier, since the mother intended to remarry in 1749.] Will of "John Pearson of Newbury", dated 5 Nov 1770, proved 6 Mar 1781, names daughter Priscilla Richardson, Jeremiah and Moses Pearson sons of my son Jeremiah "supposing him to be dead", Sarah Coker "Mother of my Grandsons Jeremiah Pearson and Moses Pearson aforesaid", sons John and Thomas, daughter Lydia Rolf, granddaughter Elisabeth Richardson, son Silas to be executor. [edit] Children of JeremiahThe will in probate 20983, combined with vital records, makes it possible to completely identify the family of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Pearson) Pearson (M5). By removing them, presumably the remainder from Byfield Church (CR5) should belong to Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Coomes) Pearson of Rowley (M3). The other families do not have as much clarity. Baptisms are indicated by the symbol of the church where recorded. Even when jurisdictional boundaries shift, families may continue to use one church. In the Newbury records, CR3 is Third Church, now of Newburyport, CR5 is Byfield Church, and CR9 is the Old South Church of Newburyport. Baptisms in CR9 appear to belong to Elder Jeremiah Pearson. Usually only a birth or a baptism date is known. If no birth location is specified, the vital records only specify a baptism, and the date given is a baptism. When the vital record is for a birth, the birth location is specified, and the date given is the birth date. If, in addition, a reference is made to a church record (due to spelling or name variations usually) that will be noted in the baptism location, but no baptism date will be available. Only in the case of three children born in Rowley, with the baptisms at the Byfield Church (covered by Newbury VRs) are both dates available (which turned out to be a helpful clue in confirming the families).
[edit] AnalysisSome of the difficulty of this disambiguation lies in the confusing use of Jr. and 3'd as identifiers. Many of the births in Newbury, for example, name the father as Jeremiah 3d (Jr. CR5), or some similar way, for example. One must be very careful about the scope of the records being reported. So for this example, he is Jeremiah 3d because he is the youngest of 3 Jeremiahs in the jurisdiction of Newbury, but Jr. at CR5 because he is youngest of two Jeremiahs attending the Byfield Church. The oldest Jeremiah attending the Byfield Church lived in Rowley, and was yet another Jeremiah, other than the 3 living in Newbury. These designations did not become clear until the identification had been worked out by other means, and only then, could they be understood.
