It quotes Frank and Betty (Roach) Egan. I am very distantly related, I believe (but I don't have proof, just circumstantial bits). If I'm right, you and I are fourth cousins once removed. My 3great-grandfather was Patrick Brennan. He came from near Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, Ireland, with his wife Mary Ann Jordan and first child, Maggie. The church records for St. Lazarian RC in Leighlinbridge list their marriage and Maggie's baptism. Catherine Brennan Roach was from the same parish. Her marriage to John Roach and the baptisms of 8 children are in the church records (Ellen, Mary, Bridget Ellen, Jane, Michael, Margaret, Thomas, and Patrick). (I have some print-outs from the church; I'd be happy to scan the Roach pages, if you'd like a copy.) The Pat Brennans lived first in Beckwith Twp, Lanark Co., Ontario, on Concession 1, Lot 16 in 1840/1841. The other end of the same lot was settled by Martin Jordan, also from Leighlinbridge (and possible Mary Ann's brother; his eldest daughter was also named Mary Ann). Pat's brother Thomas had Con 1, lot 19 in 1841. In 1851 another brother, John, was on lot 19; Patrick and Thomas' families had both moved to Grey Co. And widowed Catherine Brennan Roach was on Concession 2, Lot 19 in Beckwith with 6 children (Ellen and Jane are missing; I have no further record of them). By 1861 Catherine was in Grey County, too, almost directly across the road from the Pat Brennans. I made a map of many inter-related families in the Dornoch area; it's uploaded at www.brennan-families.com/dornoch.jpg Pat is right above the horizontal dividing line, 3 cons to the right. Catherine is below the line (in Glenelg), two lots to the right. Catherine's daughter Margaret emigrated to California in the 1860s, the same time Pat's son James did so. Margaret married John F. Teague, and James worked for John's father, William Teague. In the 1870s and 1880s several more of Pat's children moved to California, including my great-great-grandfather, Edward James Brennan. Catherine Brennan Roach's children, all in St. Lazarian's records: Ellen, baptised 16 Mar 1834; does not appear again in any records I've found. Mary, baptised 21 Feb 1836. Married John Sullivan of Glenelg; they had children Honora, John, Eugene, Jerry, Mary (married John Cremmen), and Catherine. Bridget Ellen baptised 18 May 1837. Married Andrew Priel in Glenelg. They had a large family and emigrated to Overton, Nebraska. On two different census records there are Priel cousins staying wtih the Teagues in Oakland, CA. Andrew's father was John Priel whose farm is just left of the Roaches'. Jane, baptised 30 May 1840 (twin). Does not appear again in any records I've found. Michael, baptised 30 May 1840 (twin). He's on the 1851 and 1861 census and is listed in the Directory of Grey County, 1865/66. I have not found him after that. Margaret, born 21 Mar 1842, baptised 17 Apr 1842. Arrived in California mid 1860s. Married John F. Teague before 1868 (first child's birth). John was the first constable of Berkeley, California. His father, William Teague, was an early pioneer. Margaret and John had 7 children. John died 17 Feb 1927, and Margaret 16 Jun 1933 (aged 91). They're buried at St. Mary's cemetery in Oakland, CA. I have a copy of her death certificate, if you'd like a scan of it for your records. Thomas, baptised 5 May 1844. Patrick, baptised 8 Mar 1847, died (single) 20 Mar 1926. His death was reported by Mother M. Dympna, House of Providence, Guelph. She was born Margaret Sullivan and was his first cousin once removed. Her mother, Catherine Brennan Sullivan, was born to John Brennan and Mary Rice in Leighlinbridge in 1839 before the family emigrated to Ontario. Her parents were the John Brennans living next door to Catherine Brennan Roach in Beckwith on the 1851 census. I believe Catherine Brennan Roach died July 1870 in Mara Township. Schedule 2 of the 1871 census of Mara lists a 62 year old Catherine Roach, widowed, who died of a liver complaint. I have not been able to find any records online of her grave. I don't know where/when Catherine's husband, John Roach died. The only clue is Bridget Ellen Roach Priel's obituary. It states she came to Canada with her parents when she was 8 years old. But I've not been able to locate any record of him in Beckwith. (I'm in Oregon, USA, though, so I'm dependent on online sources; if you're closer, you may have better luck.) Please feel free to contact me directly at chris (at) brennan-families (dot) com. I would love to hear from you! Chris Brennan Starfire --Starfire 16:32, 8 September 2012 (EDT) |
