[3 May 2020]I've read on this site that John Black born 4 Oct 1750 Died 20 Nov 1830 married Milly Norton is Not the son of Reverend Samuel Black married to Catherine Shaw. I recently received my dna results back from Ancestry.com, this in fact does appear to be the case. I have several matches that trace themselves to Milly Norton but 0 to this John Black. I've spent years trying to determine the actual lineage of this family line. Open to any insight someone may have Michael Black--Mikeblack64 15:48, 10 April 2020 (UTC) Mike, We may have shared some Black Family info in the past. The Black family is like a huge jigsaw puzzle with names on all the pieces - they're all the same: James, John, Samuel, William, Thomas, David, and a few Anthony's... Then they were kind enough to marry Black's like Mary, Elizabeth, Catherine... I have been chasing this gang since @2008 My Grandfather is Thomas Black 1869-1948 . Rev. Samuel Black is my 6th Great Uncle. Here's what I have: James Black was a wool merchant, born @1674(maybe in Scotland, maybe Northern Ireland). James had four sons: James, John, Anthony and Rev. Samuel Black (all born @1700-1715), Son James died leaving a son, Thomas. James, the wool merchant and his 3 sons, along with Thomas (a Grandson and Nephew) arrive in Philadelphia in 1735. I am not aware of any son David in this family. I believe David Black born 1744 in Augusta County Virginia married Elizabeth McClanahan (sp). David died in 1769. (David had a brother, Samuel born 1727 in Northern Ireland. David and Samuel parents are John Black and Isabelle Brown. This family also had a son named William Brown Black born 1747 in Augusta County, Virginia. Let's call Samuel here Samuel Brown Black to separate him from Rev. Samuel. Samuel Brown Black married Jane Porter and they had 9 children; including John and William (Blacksburg Billy I call him) - these 2 founded Blacksburg, Virginia.) Now Back to David and Eliz. McClanahan, they had a son John, who I can confirm was born 4 Oct 1750 and married Milly Norton 17 July 1792. John married late because he was fighting in the Revolutionary War. After communicating with others more knowledgeable than I, I was too quick to say that I'm not a direct descendant of The Reverend Samuel Black. FTDNA 67 marker test, kit #168122. R-L2.
