Over the past 50+ years I have researched Francis McCown of Augusta Co., Virginia. I began with Chalkley, but then used that to locate the original records either in Augusta Co. or on microfilm to read them. I have notes on his land acquisition and disposal that shows the various ways his name was spelled that will differ even in the same document. While it might have been unusual for settlers to purchase land in two different parts of the county, it was not unheard of. Perhaps he acquired one piece, tried it and another became available that he liked better. That is no reason to assume there were two different men with the same name. If you would like these land record notes I will be glad to post them on this site for you and others to use. The spelling of his name I use is the one that he signed in his original loose will in Staunton, Virginia.--Leonardmccown 10:25, 25 January 2013 (EST)

Leonard, why don't you create an "article page" that can be linked to Francis' Person Page that you can list all of the pertinent records. If you need help, I'd be happy to create it for you, and you can fill it in, just let me know.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you have, it will provide a much more complete picture of him than what is posted on Chalkley's.

Thanks and best regards,

Jim:)

Francis McCune/McCown [25 January 2013]

I noticed that you merged the two persons Francis McCoun and Francis McCune. I have rolled back the merge (for now) since the resulting page from the merge was a mess. First of all, WeRelate is a wiki site, which relies upon collaboration between multiple users. The case for two different Francis' was laid out on both of their pages, with a caveat that arguments to support the existence of only a single Francis should be discussed on their "Talk Pages" before any action was taken to merge them.

I believe the likelihood certainly exists that the two Francis' were one ih the same, but the users that have taken time to lay out these pages would appreciate it if you could support your assertions with facts and records to substantiate a merge, before you unilaterally take that upon yourself to do without checking with the other users that have contributed to their pages.

Thanks for your cooperation, assistance and best regards,

Jim

That's fine. But you are wrong! Look at the original records, not abstracts. Don't have time to worry with sloppy researchers.--Leonardmccown 10:54, 24 January 2013 (EST)

Leonard, I'd certainly invite you to lay-out the records that prove that they are one in the same. I've always had a feeling that the Francis McCune that settled in Beverley Manor is the same Francis McCoun that settled in the Borden Tract, but I have never seen records to prove it. While it was not unusual for settlers to acquire property in both areas, most settled in either one or the other.

If you have original transcript of records that prove this, I believe there are several researchers that would be happy to see them. If you'd like to e-mail me privately this information, that would also be fine: delijim@aol.com. As far as your characterization of "sloppy", I take offense to that comment, since I have worked very hard to present all of the records available for each of the early settlers of Augusta Counnty. Unfortunately, the only records available short of going to the Courthouse in Staunton (quite a distance for me from California) is what is available on-line in Chalkley's and what has been shared with me by other researchers.

Since it appears that you've done primary research on this family, sharing that information is the only way that you can help others reach the same conclusions that you have.

Best regards,

Jim
