Francis

Thank you for the transcription of the Orange County importation oath for Francis. There are several sources where these oaths appear in extraction form, and they don't necessarily agree with each other. In this particular case I've not looked to see specific source was used, though I noted (to myself) that "Markham was probably "Malcom". Whether "Mackham" is any close to "Malcom" is another matter, but in any case having the exact transcription is helpful. The extract currently given left it a bit unclear whether Francis paid for Mackham and Elizabeths importation was unclear. The exact transcription makes it clear that he did. Its common for these oaths to make clear the relationship between the various parties, though apart from husband and wife relationships, that is not the case here. So we are left to wonder how Francis and Mackham were related. Presumeably kinsmen, but to what degree is not apparent. Probably not father and son. While Francis did have a son, the DOB of that son currently given suggests that he was not an adult at the time. On the otherhand, I don't know what those DOB's are based on, so its possible they are in error. Overall, it seems likely that Mackham is a brother, cousin, or nephew. Since I don't know anything more of his history, (either before or after importation reaching a conclusion is difficult. While we know Francis settled in what is now Old Augusta, some of the importee's settled on the east side of the Blue Ridge. Mackham may be among them. That area is more difficult to search than Old Augusta, and so perhaps few have looked in Albemarle/Bedford, etc. Q 13:14, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
