James Huston [16 May 2011]

Hi

On the James Huston (4) article I moved your note to the talk page. Its a useful note to have, but its more of an informative kind of thing, rather than an addition to the article itself. If you place ~~~~ after your comments. That will "tag" your note with your username and date. Also consider uploading your GedCom to WeRelate. That will help us place you in context. Thanks!

I just found this site and it is somewhat confusing. Maybe you could answer a few questions. First of all I do not have a gedcom file (I tried a couple of software programs and I just am not crazy about them). I have all my stuff in my own personal computer set up the way I like it so I would have to fill out all my information which is NOT a problem if I know it really matters to anyone else here.

That's basically how I feel about them. I don't use genealogy programs either, except on occassion to take a look at a GedCom.

I guess what I really want to know that I am sharing my information with people who really care about genealogy. I care that we are trying to separate the Huston family so we know who is related to whom. I also care greatly that my information is accurate and backed up with facts.

me too!

The thing I love so far about this site is that people seem to care about the genealogy work they are doing. I say this because there is NO way I would put my stuff on ancestry.com even though I use ancestry.com for other things (census records mostly). The reason I won't do it is because everyone there seems to attach anyone with the same name to their trees and there is so much information that isn't even nearly accurate and it drives me crazy;)

me too!!

Which brings up my next question, how do people find out about this site? If the site wouldn't be continued what would happen to this information?

A good point. The site is still in Beta development, but even so, seems to be self sufficient based on ad generated revenue. I suspect that when all is as the management thinks it should be (getting close, I think) it will be formally announced as an operating site. For now its word of mouth, and from hits picked up in search engines.

Thanks so much for your help. I will just keep looking at everything until I get a better understanding of how to do things.

Oops, One thing I forgot to add is that William "Catfish" Huston has a (4) after his name. Does this mean he is the fourth generation or he is one of the families we are searching?

WeRelate uses an "index" to sort out people by the same name. If you make a link to a person page you have to include that index number so the program will take you to the right "William Houston". [[Person:William Houston (4)]] will take you to--the page for William Catfish Huston; [[Person:William Houston (5)]] will take you to--- someone else. Q 18:04, 16 May 2011 (EDT)
I might add that the pages in the Tapestry (such as Person:William Houston (4)) are somewhat different than those for folks outside of the Tapestry. You've probably noticed all of the interconnectivity in Tapestry pages. That's specifically designed to aid in exactly what you see going on with William Houston (4)---folks researching this line, trying to figure out the connections.
Also, as an extension of that tapestry effort there are a few private mailing lists that are designed to facilitate communication. There's a HoustonShortList, for example, specific to the Houstons within the Tapestry. There's also a general Tapestry mailing list. Since they are private mailing lists you have to be subscribed by the list admin (that would be me, basically). Let me know if you are interested. Currently, there's not much activity on the Houston mailing list; that's probably because attention is focused elsewhere at the moment. But I imagine that as things progress, the Houston's will come up again. We'd surely like to know who Catfish' parents are, for example. Q 18:11, 16 May 2011 (EDT)

Thanks!!!!

Thanks so much for your help. I guess I will try adding in some information to see if I do it right.
