User talk:Grandmakr

Hi, You have done a really great job. Thanks so much for your contributions! Would it be ok to use some of your pages as examples in my classes and demonstrations?

I did want to point out some editing tips. We run on Wikimedia software and are stuck with some of their conventions. The place index needs a comma between county and state, and you have to spell out county like you have done. So if you want your articles to automatically link to the appropriate place page, you need to enter it like Black County, Ohio. Also, it is case sensitive, so Flannery is a different name from FLANNERY. So, if you care about red links or automatic links to surname pages--you'll need to change the names. Its up to you, I didn't know if you cared about these links :) I redirected Flannery in Caldwell County, Kentucky so you could see it. You would mark and cut the text (control x), type #redirect [[new name of the page]]; save; click on the redirected title; edit; and control v. I can do this for you if you want me to.

You really have done great work. I look forward to seeing more. I will be at the FGS conference at the end of the month. If you are there, stop and say hi --sq 12:01, 17 August 2006 (MDT)

I have questions

Thank you for your compliments.

Please see e-mails I have sent you. I would like to know more about these classes and demonstrations.

I will not be attending the conference.

This "newby" just discovered the discussion option. Otherwise I would have left you a message in your forum for the Caddell family for others to see instead of your e-mail.

Classes and Demonstrations

I go to the genealogy conferences and teach people about wiki. Its quite a learning curve for people used to libraries and working alone. So, I need sample pages--examples of how to use a wiki to share genealogical information. You have really been working hard. Its great to see such enthusiasm. --sq 10:12, 21 August 2006 (MDT)

Permission to use my Wiki Pages

Yes, you can use my Wiki pages.

If I click on the "Ignore Wiki Formatting", is that for the one message I'm working on, or for all of my messages?

Would I then be able to use HTML coding?

When I link one page to another, in some cases I'd like to link on the words I'm typing instead of [1](that symbol).

What I have here is my difficult lines that I believe there is a possibility of solving. There are others, but much more complicated. At one time, I was aware of at least eight people who were working on my BLUNT line from Hanover County, Virginia.

Are you still considering merging with the other site? Will the options at this site be included?

I'm considering adding other lines that can be picked up within the surname in place part of your site. I just don't want to go to the work if you are going to merge and that part will not be used or as user friendly.

Is there any reason wiki uses the < b r > command over the < p > command (spaces added so the command can be seen) or why they were both created for that matter?

If you use this command, the material inside the bracketed nowiki will show the wiki commands. So if I type nowiki command with [[page name]], blackslash nowiki, you can see the brackets necessary to create a link. Select the show preview button below to see what it looks like.
Would I then be able to use HTML coding?
Yes, you can use most html commands. Check with the Formatting.
When I link one page to another, in some cases I'd like to link on the words I'm typing instead of [1](that symbol).
If you type [http://www.url(space)blue link words] you will get link words and not the [1], i.e. genealogy

We will be bringing up ancestor page funcitionality shortly. We will have person pages like Ella Boone Grey Phillips by the end of the month. GEDCOM uploads will shortly follow. If you have any suggestions for useability we would appreciate them. I need to update Ella's page tonight, so please hold your comments until then. In a months you can see if the GEDCOM upload/ancestor page suits your needs. I can't see this changing if we merged with anyone.

I don't know, it just does. Wikimedia does somethings different.--sq 12:17, 21 August 2006 (MDT)

Smelser, Prigmore, Knight [17 September 2008]

Hello,

Thanks for your message. I notice some of the locations you mentioned. I think some of the locations are the same ones. You might want to look on the website Heritage Quest at James Knight's (1750-1838) American Revolutionary pension file. James Knight would be a (unknown first name) Smelser's brother in law. I do not have sources on James Knight's wife's (Prigmore) family yet. I have yet to find the name of that Smelser. That Smelser married Nancy Prigmore (@ 1768- ?). One day I will find, hopefully, their father in law, Joseph Prigmore's probate in TN (@ 1721- @1828).

Hope this helps. --DFree 12:43, 17 September 2008 (EDT)

Absalom Cox & Mary Prigmore [28 January 2009]

Hello,

I am wondering if you had seen User:Bettykay. She has Family: Absalom Cox and Mary Prigmore. Do you know this User? She/He has not contributed for a while. I am thinking of merging this couple. Suggestions?

Surname:Schmelzer [20 February 2009]

Hi Katherine, You had a great idea for redirects on surname pages, Dallan is going to add it to his to do list. The problem is that it won't work properly until Dallan makes the fix. Right now, the system uses all the alternate names for the search. If the page doesn't list alternate names but is redirected, the search doesn't follow the redirect and doesn't have any alternate spellings for the name. So, Smelser would have no alternate spellings that were not on the Smelser page. It's better to have Smelser listed as an alternate on the Schmelzer page. I deleted the unnecessary pages and redirects. Thanks so much for the idea. --Solveig--sq 16:54, 20 February 2009 (EST)

John Flint 1765-1817 Caldwell County, KY [8 July 2020]

With much sincerely I want to recognize and thank you for the work regarding my ancestor John Flint in Caldwell County, KY, 1765-1817. This was the impetus for my additional research this year, on-site in Graves and Caldwell counties. The following should help further clarify:

1. Buried directly next to John Flint in Hill Cemetery is Nancy W Flint, noted as infant daughter of Benjamin W and Nancy Ann Ford Flint. Pictures of her headstone are now in my Ancestry.com tree and posted on WeRelate.org. This also solves what many people have confused with the Irish born John Flint, who also died in Caldwell County in 1819, as being Benjamin W's father...Ben W and Ann wouldn't have buried their daughter next to the wrong person. Both John and granddaughter Nancy's graves are in excellent condition. 2. At Hill Cemetery, the Fords and Joneses are also buried within 25 feet; who were Ann Ford Flint's people 3. Caldwell County records, actually in the courthouse deed and probate books, show that Benjamin W presented himself in court in 1817 with witnesses to administer his father's estate and subsequently took over the land and taxes, settled debts, and lived there for several years on Skinframe Creek before selling and moving the family to Graves County, near where I grew up. 4. multiple records in the courthouse for livestock transactions, property deeds, road work warrants, reference John and Benjamin W 5. Benjamin W's first son was named John, who then named his first son Benjamin. 6. Benjamin W Flint is clearly documented in Graves County deeds, taxes, newspapers, as are all subsequent Flint generations buried in Hebron Cemetery in Lowes, KY; Alexander Addison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Morgan (my grandfather).

There is a huge, placarded tree in Hebron Cemetery planted when some of the family left to go out west, 1907.

Sincerely, Rodney “Eli” Flint (son of Rodney Flint- Alex Morgan Flint- Ben F Flint- Alex A Flint- Ben W Flint- John Flint)--Eli Flint 03:43, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

You are welcome.

I believe YOUR John FLINT to be the Virginia soldier. See the probate file in which his property included a ship's maul and ship carpenter tools.

I descended from the other John FLINT on Skinframe Creek.

Do you have a lead to your John's parents? I think they were in Maryland after the war. After the woman, I believe, to be his mother died, then he moved to Kentucky.--Grandmakr 16:22, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
