As well as that I am trying to reduce the number of places in a county by only listing parishes and larger areas as in our placename list. Villages, hamlets, settlements, and manors are redirected to the parish in which they were located in 1900. I admit that the description "Alt names" does not exactly match this usage, but Alt Names was the name of the box and we have never bothered to change it. All redirected places are automatically entered into the box so that a user can find the smaller places within the parish that would have the birth, marriage and death registers in which the inhabitants were recorded. I haven't kept a check of the original number of places listed in Somerset when I started to work on the county, but even after reducing the places down to parishes only there are still about 600 in the list.
