It appears that brackets cause problems in page titles (I'll add this to the instructions). If you edit your homepage and remove the brackets from your personal research page title, you should be able to click on the title after saving the changes to your homepage.--Dallan 22:54, 3 April 2006 (MDT)

Got it. I didn't understand the instructions completely but when I tried it I see what you mean. --Cheryl 09:33, 4 April 2006 (MDT)

Hi, Great page. Thanks so much for participating. Here are some hints to help other researchers find you and collaborate.

  • You'll notice that all your Name in place and all the place pages are red. This means there is no page created for these pages. so, the search function won't pick up your pages when it searches for Clark. To create the page, click on the red link, type a little bit on the new page and save:)
  • Your cousins may find info about your line in the surrounding area--not say Logan County per se. It will be easier to connect with other researchers if you create the page for a less specific area. We recommend using the state like Clark in Illinois.

Then make a sub heading on the page ==Logan county, Illinois== for your information. More people will search for Clark in Illinois than for a particular county :)

  • If you use the the full name of the state instead of the postal code, you will connect to the place page for that county. There is a place for each county in the US. They are all listed like Logan County, Illinois.

Again, thanks so much for your article.--sq 15:02, 23 May 2006 (MDT)

Location, Location, Location

I am not searching for the Clarks in any place but those counties listed. Clark is a very common name. I am not remotely interested in all Clarks in Illinois. My Clarks [and other ancestors] all went to one county and stayed there, very thoughtful of them. I will take care of the other when I get a chance.

You are so lucky. My people seemed to move all over. Guess the grass was always greener. Happy hunting.--sq 23:03, 24 May 2006 (MDT)

License issues

Hi, WeRelate will feature ancestor pages in a few weeks and GEDCOM uploads about December, 2006. Ancestor pages will make posting biographies very simple. This has brought up some licensing issues. Please read Licensing issues discussion page and give us your opinion. Thanks --sq 16:08, 14 August 2006 (MDT)

Signing "talk" pages

Hello, Cheryl. Thanks for the recent word of support for standardising/standardizing the licensing discussion. I wondered whether you were new here when I saw the typed signature, but I see from your contributions that you're far from being a complete beginner! Just save yourself the trouble of typing name and date on "Watercooler" and all talk pages, though - I still use the four tildes most of the time but I occasionally remember how much easier it is to hit the squiggle in the edit bar. Happy hunting! --Robin Patterson 19:20, 15 August 2006 (MDT)

No clue what a "squiggle" is -- oops, I think I see it now. --Cheryl 13:50, 16 August 2006 (MDT)  :-)

Mount Pulaski

Hi Cheryl, I merged the Place:Mt. Pulaski, IL page that you wrote into the existing Place:Mount Pulaski, Illinois page. I think we should standardize on not using abbreviations in place titles in order to make it easier for others to find the pages. That's why I merged your page into the Place:Mount Pulaski, Illinois page. While I was at it I also merged the Place:Mt. Pulaski, Illinois page into the Place:Mount Pulaski, Illinois page. So now we have one page for Mt Pulaski and another for the township. On a related note, I read the information you've added to the Place:Logan County, Illinois page. Wonderful! I think it will really help people.--Dallan 23:28, 16 August 2006 (MDT)

Sounds fine to me. Some search engines want Mt. Pulaski and some want Mount Pulaski. You never know which is which. I tend to think abbreviations should not be used because who knows which ones will still be in use 10-20 years down the road. It was once Ill. and now it is IL... --Cheryl 12:18, 17 August 2006 (MDT)

Thanks. By the way, handling abbreviations better in search is one of our goals. That's why the "alternate names" field is important. We can put previous names and common abbreviations in there. Then, when people click on "include alternate names" in the Web search screen, we'll search on the preferred name as well as all of the alternates.--Dallan 12:53, 17 August 2006 (MDT)

Photos

Do any of your know how to upload photos to this website? They mention in the tutorial that you can, but skip over the 'how' part. ???? Coralynn

Try Help:Images tutorial. We're working on a video tutorial for images, but it will likely be the end of April when it's ready.--Dallan 21:48, 4 April 2007 (MDT)

Surname list [12 October 2007]

Hi, When we created the surname index, we typed in alternate spellings and derivations from various sources and also include names encountered from our initial crawl genealogy web sites. If a name is followed by WeRelate agent, the computer found it had enough in common with the root name to be included. But computers aren't people and sometimes make connections that a person would not agree with. If you find a WeRelate agent name that is obviously wrong, please edit the list. If the name is followed by a recognized source please leave it alone. Believe it or not, people who were born Petulengro immigrated as Smith, and Fikuppucci became Phillips, at least according to Oxford Dictionary of Surnames. That's about the most authoritative source I know of.

You are welcome to edit name lists if you see problems and to add alternate spelling/derivations when you have them. This will update the search and help your cousins in their search. Right now, the system updates overnight, soon we will be updating the indexes every fifteen minutes. Hope this helps :) Thanks so much for your input and interest. Please let me know if you have any questions. --sq 19:32, 10 October 2007 (EDT)

It is my understanding that current research indicates people's names were not changed at Ellis Island or other ports. There may have been some variations in spelling and some shortening but Edajklgjlsag did not immigrate as Smith. I think adding all those names pads the page but cuts down on the site's usefulness.--Cheryl 17:21, 11 October 2007 (EDT)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [2 February 2013]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Ancestors of Ellis Downing.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.
