John Hays of Rockbridge, VA [13 November 2012]

Hello Audra,

I saw you left a message for a WeRelate member who traces their family tree back to John Hays of Hays Creek in Augusta/Rockbridge county in Virginia. I was wondering if you got a response from that individual?

My family tree also goes back to this John Hays. I have DNA evidence (Y-chromosome) of the family connection to this man. In any case, I was wondering if your John Hays was the oldest son of Andrew Hays (died 1786) who was the oldest son of the original emigrant John Hays (died Feb 1750). This John Hays, who is the son of Andrew, was a Major in Virginia militia and is listed as a Revolutionary War Patriot in the Daughters (and Sons) of the American Revolution.

I have spent untold hours identifying and sorting various John Hayses in Virginia in an attempt to find evidence of connection between my 4th GGF, William Hays and the emigrant John Hays. I have the DNA evidence but still looking for proof in the historical record. Anyway, the reason for my reaching out to you is that I found the Last Will and Testament of this younger John Hays. This record is actually unreadable in the Rockbridge County Will Book but I found a copy of it associated with a Virginia Chancery Court case where the children/heirs of David Hays (John's youngest brother) are suing the children/heir of John Hays for compensation related to the sale of the Stone House Plantation.

If this is your John Hays and you are interested in this will, please let me know.
