Defect 1 [2 March 2016]

Daughter, not widow. Apparent editing error, see 3:579 where Savage says widow m. William Leete, daughter m. Thomas Trowbridge.

Defect 2 [1 March 2016]

Savage copied Jackson's History of Newton, publ. 1854, and did not investigate enough to discover Jackson's error.

James Trowbridge and wife Hannah m. early 1709, have children 1709, 1711, 1713, and he d. 1714. How can another daughter, Jemima, fit?

On p. 421, Jackson says Abraham Jackson's will, gives his g. dr. Jemima Trowbridge, £15. This is the reason for thinking 1) Jemima exists, and therefore 2) that James Trowbridge had a second wife who must have been a Hannah Jackson.

  • There is no birth record for a daughter of Abraham Jackson's named Hannah.
  • There is no death record for James' first wife Hannah.
  • There is no marriage record for James and Hannah Jackson.

Published Newton VRs show a birth of Jemima Trowbridge on p. 192 with no date, but the editor's comment "? b. after ch. b. June 16, 1713". The child born June 1713 is Hannah and the father James died 11 months later on 21 May 1714. The birth record is based on the 1853 copy of town records (with additions by the town committee) here where Jemima's name is added at the bottom of the family register with no date. Clearly there is no record of her in the originals since there would be a date. Hannah's birth is found in the originals at the top of p. 22, but no record of Jemima has been found. So very likely the addition of Jemima was influenced by Jackson himself, putting his error into the records. So it appears, we can add to the above list:

  • There is no birth record for Jemima.

The probate records of Middlesex county show guardian files for the three children Margaret, Daniel, and Hannah, in 1727. There is no guardian file for Jemima? Probably because she was not a daughter of James Trowbridge. (His probate file shows that by 1727 his wife was Hannah Bowman, another error by Jackson, but not pertinent to this discussion.)

Were there any other Jemima Trowbridges in Newton when Abraham Jackson wrote his will in 1738/39? Well it turns out that in 1734 Jonathan Trowbridge m. Jemima Bright, and they proceeded to have several children in Newton. Abraham Jackson mentions Margaret Bright as one of his three daughters (no mention of a daughter named Hannah), and Jemima (Bright) Trowbridge happens to be born in Watertown 24 Feb 1711/12 to Henry and Margaret Bright according to Watertown Records, Vol. 2, p. 53.

James Trowbridge had only one wife, Hannah Bacon. She m. (2) John Fuller, m. (3) Joseph Bowman. --Jrich 22:18, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Defect 3 [2 March 2016]

Not daughter of Samuel (who had no daughter Mary), but grand-daughter (daughter of his son Edward), b. 1687. See History of Cambridge Vol. 2, p. 562.
