yr. unit. with first sett. in founda. of governm. He may have come in
the Elizabeth to Boston from Ipswich in Co. Suffk. 1634, aged 22; and
was made clk. of the milit. comp. Feb. 1648; had John, b. 1637; Samuel,
1639, both bapt. at N. H. 1640, Mary, wh. as Porter says, m. William
Chatterton; and Esther 1 Mar. 1646. His inv. was of 13 May 1648. JOHN,
Newport, the disting. author of "Ill News from N. E." a physician, came
first, he says, to Boston in Nov. 1637, thence driv. the next yr. as a
favorer of Mrs. Hutchinson, went to R. I. and is venerat. as f. of the
settlem. at N. By fam. rec. he was of Bedfordsh. third s. of Thomas
and Rose, b. 8 Oct. 1609; bec. treasr. of the Col. 1649, and was sent to
Eng. two yrs. after to prevail on the Council of State to revoke the
extra. powers giv. to Coddington, but on his coming to Boston to embark
was imprison. 1651. In 1652 he pub. at London his valua. tract, a
narrative of the persecut. of his friends here; after long serv. in Eng.
he was made dept.-gov. of the unit. col. of R. I. and Providence Planta.
in 1669, and 70, again agent to Eng. but d. here 20 Apr. 1676, in his
will, made that day, call. hims. a. 66 yrs. old. He names in it two ws.
the first a d. of John Harges of Bedfordsh. and the name of the other is
unkn. yet he had no ch. says Backus, I. 443. By three of his brs. the
name has been hon. perpet. in that prov. and state. Ano. physician was
JOHN of Newbury 1638, wh. bef. com. from Eng. had m. Martha, sis.
of Sir Richard Saltonstall, was freem. 22 May 1639, and perhaps rep.
the same yr. rem. ten yrs. after to Boston, and was noted in his profess.
as also for keep. fine horses. He d. Nov. 1664, in his will of 26 Aug.
preced. he ment. wid. Martha, made extrix. s. John, d. Jemima, wh. had
m. 6 Nov. 1656, Robert Drew of B. and the ch. of Jemima, names
John, and Elizabeth His wid. d. 19 Sept. 1680, aged 85. Curious confus.
is obs. in Geneal. Reg. XIII. 14 and 15, where are copies, correct. from
Prob. Rec. Vols. I. and IV. wherein the wid. is twice call. Martha in the
will, yet a few, very few mos. after the inv. purport. to be of her late h.
as est. of Mr. John C. is said to be sw. by Elizabeth The amt. was large,
and part of it was stoves for sav. fire wood, for wh. the Gen. Ct. had giv.
him patent, 1652 and 6 for his life. How much it anticip. Dr. Franklin's,
of a hundred yrs. later, I suppose can never be learn. but if any one
will overcome the above ment. contradict. between will and inv. by
find. the orig. papers, he will be more happy than my dilig. search.
JOHN, Weymouth 1653. JOHN, Hartford, an orig. propr. rem. to
Farmington, there d. 22 Nov. 1712, at gr. age. He had John, wh. d.
unm. 1709; Matthew; Ebenezer, bapt. 10 Aug. 1690, d. soon; and
nine ds. Mary, b. a. 1667, wh. m. Samuel Huntington; Sarah,
w. of Thomas Root; both of Lebanon; Abigail, wh. m. 23 Aug.
1699, Joseph Pisley of Westfield; Rachel, w. of Caleb Jones
