[edit] Complete Baronetage.[Index volume, page 63] [edit] Appendix, containing alphabetical list of such Baronetcies (created 1611 to 1800) as are omitted (and some few that are imperfectly dealt with) in “ The Complete Baronetage, 1611 to 1800, by G.E.C.,” mentioned on page 1.
A creation of a Baronetcy of this name is, in some measure, implied by a certificate, dated 7 Nov. 1679, at the College of Arms, London, that no record of any Baronetcy or Knighthood is recorded, since the Restoration in 1660, as having been granted to John Ballentine, of Northumberland or Cumberland.
“ Sir David Barclay, of Cullairne, Baronet ” [S.]. It is stated in the “ Index to Services of Heirs ” that in 1702, John Barclay was served heir to his father, John Barclay, who d. Jan. 1684, which John was son of Sir David Barclay, of Cullairnie, Baronet.
In the Calendar of State Papers for 1660 is a warrant to create “ Richard Bennet ” a Baronet, with rem. to his brother, Sir Humphrey Bennet. Query, if “ Richard ” is not a mistake for “ Thomas.” Thomas Bennet, of Babraham, co. Cambridge (elder br. of Sir Humphrey Bennet, of Shalden, Hants, Knighted before Dec. 1645), was cr. a Baronet 22 Nov. 1660. These, however, had as their eldest br., Richard Bennet, of Kew, Surrey, who d. s.p.m. in April 1658. Though this Richard is bur. at Babraham, 29 April 1658, as “ Richard Benet, Esq., of Chancery Lane, Middlesex,” it may possibly refer to him for there is at Babraham a monumental inscription as follows :—“ Here lie buried Richard & Thomas Benet, two brothers, and both of ym Baronetts. They lived together & were brought up together at schoole, at ye university & at Inns of Court. They married two sisters, ye daughters & heirs of Levinus Munk, Esq.
“ Sir John Bourke, Knt. and Baronet [I.], and Dame Margaret his wife,” on 29 Jan. 1652/3, preferred a petition against Hugh Connor [Chancery Proceedings], and a decree was made thereon 9 Oct. 1654. This Margaret was relict of Walter Bermingham, of Dunfert, co. Kildare (who d. 13 June 1638), and da. of Gerald FitzMaurice, of Galye, co. Kerry, and the above-named John was probably “ Sir John Bourke, Mayor of Limerick,” who in 1646 was “ attended on ” by “ the Herald of Arms, vested in his coat of office.” See Richard Billings' History of the Confederate War, 1641–48. ... |
