Template:FSID/doc

Watchers

This template is used to create a link to the FamilySearch Family Tree.

Usage

This template can be placed anywhere on a page, but the most common usage is:

  • in a source citation where the source title = FamilySearch Family Tree
  • in the description field of a Reference Number fact (typically only if not used in a source citation)

Note that the template takes 2 parameters but is designed to use only 1 when used in a Reference Number fact (see below).

Usage in a source citation

Create a source citation of type Source and enter FamilySearch Family Tree in the title field. Enter the following in the source citation:

{{FSID|ID|text}}

where:

ID = the ID number copied from the FamilySearch Family Tree record (appearing below the name, with a mixture of letters and numbers formatted as XXXX-XXX)
text = the text you wish to display in the link on the WeRelate page

WeRelate will display the text you included, serving as a link to the FamilySearch Family Tree record.

Examples

  1. {{FSID|LR12-XF1|Robert Stewart}}
    will appear as:
    Robert Stewart
  2. {{FSID|LR12-XF1|LR12-XF1}}
    will appear as:
    LR12-XF1

Special Case

Sometimes, a source you want to cite exists (possibly as an image or transcript) on the FamilySearch page of a relative of the person you are working on. In this case, it is helpful to make a note in the source citation that the FamilySearch page is for the relative, e.g.,

{{FSID|L5LC-NTQ|Jacob Stewart}}, Robert's father's page

lest the reader think you made a mistake in the link. In this case, you may wish to also create a Reference Number fact for the FamilySearch Family Tree ID of the person you are working on.

Usage in a Reference Number fact

Add an event/fact and select type Reference Number. Enter the following in the description field:

{{FSID|ID}}

where:

ID = the ID number copied from the FamilySearch Family Tree record (appearing below the name, with a mixture of letters and numbers formatted as XXXX-XXX)

WeRelate will display the FamilySearch Family Tree ID, serving as a link to the FamilySearch Family Tree record, followed by "(FamilySearch Family Tree)" - this lets the reader know which site the reference number is for.

Example

{{FSID|LR12-XF1}}
will appear as:
LR12-XF1 (FamilySearch Family Tree)
