Help:Conventions/Cross referencing other sites

Contents

Quick reference

WeRelate has templates to link WeRelate Person pages to corresponding pages in other genealogical wiki's, Wikidata, and the Ancestral File. These templates can be found in Category:Cross reference templates.

Purpose

WeRelate advocates for collaboration within the genealogical community to help improve the overall quality of genealogical data. Collaboration is a fundamental concept within a wiki, but there is also the possibility of collaboration between users using different wiki's. This collaboration can be made easier if pages are cross-referenced between the sites.

For more information about other genealogical wiki's, please look at the relevant pages on their websites.

Cross reference from WeRelate to another site

To support collaboration, WeRelate provides templates for cross referencing Person pages in WeRelate to pages in other genealogical wiki's, to Wikidata, and to the Ancestral File. These templates can be found in Category:Cross reference templates. Usage is documented on the page of each template.

Note that these templates can be used in source citations if the other site was used as a source, but can also be used just for cross-referencing when the other site wasn't used as a source. Care should be taken to avoid cross-referencing to pages that conflate different individuals on the same page, as this would risk spreading the confusion.

Cross reference from another site to WeRelate

Other genealogical sites can also be pointed back to WeRelate by making a WeRelate page a source.

Adding a WeRelate Page as a FamilySearch Family Tree Source

You can draw the attention of users of FamilySearch Family Tree to a WeRelate page by adding the WeRelate page as a source to the FamilySearch Family Tree page. This is especially appropriate and useful if the WeRelate page has better data or contains a larger number of facts and source references than the FamilySearch page.

  • If you are looking at the traditional FamilySearch Family Tree view (with several tabs across the top) select the Sources tab.
  • If you are looking at the "discovery page", scroll down to the Sources block and select VIEW ALL.
  • Select Add Source and enter the following descriptive entries:
  • Source Title: Type the person's name within WeRelate (Joe Smith in WeRelate)
  • Web Page: Enter the WeRelate web page URL
  • Where the Record Is Found (Citation): WeRelate.org
  • Describe the Record (Notes): Transcribe extract of pertinent data from WeRelate person page
  • Reason to Attach Source: Enter pertinent supporting reasons
  • Select the Information or Events in this Source: Select events the source substantiates
  • Select Save and this source now directs visitors to the WeRelate person page.
  • You may want to fill in the "Watch" star on the FamilySearch Family Tree page to keep abreast of future changes in that page.
