Map: The Evolution of Ontario's Boundaries [27 May 2012]

In reading through this article and clicking on "The Evolution of Ontario's Boundaries" to review the map I was led to a "dead link" page provided by Ontario Archives. Ontario Archives suggested that I advise the website who provided the link.

Is PeterP, the original provider of the article, still active on WeRelate? It is now 2012 and there have been a number of changes in provision of sources since the article was written.

  • Library and Archives Canada (LAC) have increased the number of censuses (not transcriptions) availabale online and I have heard they will complete the set with 1861 this year. Since then they have decided to reduce staff by 30%, so this may have changed.
  • Archives of Ontario (AO) have changed their address. (134 Ian Macdonald Blvd, Toronto, Ontario M7A 2C5)
  • The years of vital statistics availability have increased. I think the annual date for new release is 1 July, or shortly afterward.
  • The Ontario Vital Statistics Project may have ceased acquiring more entries. All available-to-the-public BMD are supposed to be on Ancestry.ca now (provided they have been indexed correctly) and this may have reduced the Project's motivation.
  • There is a huge website named Ontario GenWeb www.geneofun.on.ca/ongenweb and www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canon/research-beginONT.html. The website's two sections hold all sorts of genealogical information provided by volunteers from all over the province. Its work on the history of the changes in county boundaries is to be commended. It also has a cemetery project (fairly new) and a census project (older, but still building).

I will be glad to make improvements to the Guide, but I don't want to step on anyone's toes.
