A Final Word

This word should take the form of apology, in the first place, to express my feelings properly. The incompleteness and imperfection of my task, which must now be considered finished, or rather, ended, make it necessary. While doing the work I had not the intention at all of a publication of it, and would not have undertaken it but for some insistence of some others who felt interested.

Because of those imperfections there will doubtless be found errors of various kinds, and omissions; the former may be corrected, and the later supplied, by any who may have more intimate knowledge of their own family relations. For this purposed a number of blank pages are inserted at the back of the book. They may serve also for extensions of the family record as may be desired.

I would have been much gratified to have more extended sketches of many members, but I could put up only what was furnished me. The more lengthy sketch of my father was put in as I thought I was writing only for his own immediate descendants; that is true also of my lines on the Guthrie family.

I must acknowledge the help of some others in furthering the work; To my cousin, Charles L. Gilcrest of Des Moines, I am indebted for assistance in obtaining much of my material; to my nephew, Frank R. Hollenback, of Denver, for enlisting the interest of others in the matter of publication; to my son Robert A. Gilcrest, Jr., of Kansas City, Kansas, for the work of putting it over the press.
