[edit] Usage TipsName index and images of Tennessee death certificates. Statewide death registration began in 1914. A free account may be necessary to view images. Names are indexed as the transcribers interpret the handwriting on the certificates. Between the poor handwriting, poor informants, and poor spelling, certificates may be found under more "creative" spellings than typical. There are also some instances of a woman being listed as "Mrs. Husband's Name" instead of her own first name. If you know the death year, it may be useful to look at the alphabetical index found on the Tennessee Archives website before searching for the image. See the FamilySearch wiki for more information on this source collection. Note: This page refers to the same source as Source:Tennessee, United States. Death Records, 1914-1950, but it includes an additional 5 years of records. If you accessed the collection online, this is the source you should cite. |
