The Star Beacon is the North Star in the Big Dipper. Most of Ashtabula County was anti-slavery and an important stopping place on the underground railroad before the Emancipation Proclamation. Escaped slaves could follow the "Drinking Gourd" constellation north to freedom. From Ashtabula County, African Americans could board vessels to freedom in Canada. Sometimes this newspaper referred to as the Ashtabula Star-Beacon. Previous titles that merged: Star and Beacon. |
