[edit] Research TipsThe population schedules of the ninth census (1870) of the United States are reproduced by the National Archives on the 1,761 rolls of Microcopy #593 and the 13 rolls of T-132. The schedules for each state or territory are bound in one or more volumes. The volumes are arranged alphabetically by name of state, thereunder by county, and thereunder by city, township, or minor civil division (MCD). The counties, cities, townships, and MCDs are not always arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The eight volumes for the state of Kansas are on rolls 428–443. Roll 439 contains the schedules from the sixth volume for the counties of McPherson, Miami, Mitchell, Montgomery, and Morris. McPherson County begins on leaf 384 of the sixth volume and continues to leaf 397. The table below shows the populations of the places as they appeared in the population schedules. The official enumeration day of the census was 1 June 1870. This census was the first United States census since the admission to the union of the state of Kansas in 1861 and the establishment of McPherson County in 1867.
