UNCLE TOM GILBERT of the Edna Hill community was in town one day last week and in conversing with a Progress reporter, became reminiscent and talked in an interesting manner of some of his war experiences. The subject was brought up through his reading a recent news items in the Progress regarding the death of his old comrade, Capt. D. MOORE, at the home of his daughter MRS. LEE BAYS of this city. Mr. Gilbert recited that he and Mr. Moore were comrades in the Civil War, both having enlisted in Co. D. of the 43rd Regiment of Mississippi Volunteers and operated under JOHNSON in LORAINE’S Division of ADAMS Brigade with Col. HARRIS as their commander. They were together in the retreat before Sherman in his historic march to the sea and in the battles at Rasaca, Georgia and in many engagements in Tennessee after that. He recalled that Mr. Moore was struck by lightning at the battle of New Hope Church in Georgia and for a time, it was feared that he would die and was taken to the hospital. During the battle, a terrific electrical storm occurred and he says with the roar of the elements and that of the artillery and the rattle of the musketry, this experience was one of the most terrible that he had ever had occasion to undergo.
