Original Data

Venn, J. A., comp.. Alumni Cantabrigienses. London, England: Cambridge University Press, 1922-1954.

Usage Tips

Alumni Cantabrigienses was compiled by John and J.A. Venn, former presidents of Gonville and Caius and Queens' Colleges respectively. This list of all known students, graduates, and officers at the University of Cambridge offers information from various sources besides the university's records, which date from around 1261. The entire collection contains 10 volumes in 2 sets. The first set covers alumni from the earliest records to 1752 and the second set from 1752 to 1900. The compilation was completed in 1956.

Every entry offers important information which may include any of the following: notable accomplishments, occupation, birth date, birth place, other schooling, spouse's name, parent's names, siblings and other important associations. For researchers of learned English ancestors, this can be a helpful source of detailed information.

ACAD

The 10 volumes of the original text, as well as an additional volume composed by A. B. Emden, comprise data in the ACAD database. The Emden volume "largely supercedes the information in Venn for everyone at Cambridge before 1500." A conference presentation by J. L. Dawson in 2000, which was subsequently published in Computers in Genealogy in December 2001 (Vol 7 No 8 pp 363-375), describes ACAD and its origins.
