West Hauxwell (#31 on map) is now a civil parish and hamlet in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated 0.5 mile south-southwest of East Hauxwell (#12) and 4.5 miles northeast of Leyburn (#21).

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, West Hauxwell was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient or ecclesiastical parish of East Hauxwell or Hauxwell, in the Hang West Wapentake.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"HAUKSWELL, Hauxwell, or Hawkswell, two townships and a parish in Leyburn district, [North Riding of] Yorkshire. The townships are [East Hauxwell] and [West Hauxwell] ; and they lie 2¾ miles N of Constable-Burton [railway] station, and 4¼ NE of Leyburn. Acres: 2,040. Real property: £2,105. Population: 98 and 58. Houses: 28 and 6.
"The parish contains also the townships of Garriston (#16) and Barden (#3); and its post town is Bedale (not on map). Acres: 4,030. Real property: £3,397. Population: 273. Houses: 59. The property is divided among a few. The manor, with Hankswell Hall, an ancient mansion, belongs to the Gales.
"The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon. Value: £295. Patron: Miss Gale. The church is ancient but good; and has an embattled tower. The churchyard contains tombs of Knights Templar, and [the] remains of a very ancient cross."

The area of the parish of Hauxwell was 3,850 acres, and divided into its townships East Hauxwell: 1250 acres, West Hauxwell: 900 acres, Barden: 1780 acres and Garriston: 670 acres.
