Tomahawk Cemetery

Tomahawk Cemetery is a city-owned cemetery occupying about 0.5 acres on a hilltop along Metcalf Avenue. The entrance to the cemetery is off of West 133rd Street. It is located in SW¼ SW¼ Sec. 29, T. 13 S., R. 25 E., 6th P.M., which was formerly within the bounds of the township of Oxford before being annexed by the city of Overland Park in 1968. The cemetery was established in 1870 by a gift of land by Daniel and Agnes Murdock. It was named after nearby Tomahawk Creek. The last burial was probably that of Edmond Fletcher, who died in 1959, but the cemetery has been closed for new burials since about 1991. In the early 1990s, the city widened Metcalf Avenue and relocated many of the graves within the cemetery. Because most of them did not have markers, they were given new “Unknown” markers.
