Thorpe Abbotts is a village within the present civil parish of Brockdish (where the population is listed) in the English county of Norfolk. The village is 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east of Diss, 20.8 miles (33.5 km) south southwest of Norwich and 106 miles (171 km) northeast of London. The village lies 0.4 miles (0.64 km) north of the A143 Diss to Great Yarmouth road. The nearest railway station is at Diss for the Great Eastern Main Line which runs between Norwich and Liverpool Street station, London. The village, as part of the larger parish in the 2001 census, had a population of 605. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the District of South Norfolk.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Thorpe Abbots from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"THORPE-ABBOTS, a parish in Depwade [registration] district, Norfolk; 3¾ miles E of Diss [railway] station. Post town: Scole. Acres: 1,122. Real property: £1,819. Population: 256. Houses: 55. The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £305. Patron: J. P. Reade, Esq. The church is good. Charities, £9."

Thorpe Abbots became part of Brockdish parish in 1935. Previously it had been a separate civil parish and part of Depwade Rural District since 1894.
