The Tavistock Rural District was located on the western border of Devon with Plympton St. Mary Rural District to the south and Okehampton Rural District to the north. It was comprised of 26 civil parishes and was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It replaced the earlier Crediton Rural Sanitary District which catered for the area's needs during the latter part of the 19th century. In 1974 the area covered by the rural district became part of the current non-metropolitan West Devon District which also serves urban districts of Okehampton and Tavistock, and the former Okehampton Rural District.
