"Stiles Town or Stilestown was north of a section of Montville [Twp.] called Pine Brook, which is the southernmost section of the township.

According to The Early History of Montville by John Kanouse, 'Preceding north of this [Pine Brook] we come to a neighborhood settled in the beginning principally by families of the name of Baldwin, Courter, Jacobus and Stiles. Indeed, there were so many in this vicinity of the name of Stiles that the neighborhood was called Stiles Town, which name it retained for many years; and even now it is so called by some old persons, although among the present families living there that name has disappeared, with the exception of one Levi Stiles, aged 85 years.'

I also found a map in our collection which is a reproduction called Map of Montville Township, Then Part of Pequannock [Twp.], New Jersey, 1741 - 1799; Historic Sites Still in Existence with Date of Construction. On this map just a bit north of what is present-day Pine Brook is the Samuel Stiles House, dated 1770. It is fair to assume that this was the location of Stiles Town."
