Scruton (#21 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is 4 miles (6 km) west of Northallerton. According to the 2001 UK census the parish had a population of 442, decreasing to 424 at the 2011 UK census.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Scruton was part of Bedale Rural District. Historically, it was an ancient and ecclesiastical parish in the wapentake of Hang East.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"SCRUTON, a village and a parish in Bedale [registration] district, [North Riding of] Yorkshire. The village stands near the Northallerton and Leyburn railway, 3½ miles N E of Bedale; and has a station on the railway, and a post-office under Bedale. The parish comprises 2,066 acres. Real property: £4,194. Population: 408. Houses: 96. The property is divided among a few. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon. Value: £550. Patron: H. Coore, Esq. The church is ancient, and was recently restored. There are a national school, and charities £17."
