Rothersthorpe is a small village and civil parish of medieval origin, in South Northamptonshire, England. It is 4 miles (6 km) from the town of Northampton. The 2001 UK census showed 500 people living in the parish in 191 dwellings. The Northampton Arm of the Grand Union Canal, built in 1815 passes near to Rothersthorpe. Seventeen locks, taking the canal into Northampton and its junction with the River Nene, take about two hours for a boat to travel through. The village is bisected by the Banbury Lane, an ancient drovers' road along which cattle were once taken to market in Banbury from as far afield as Scotland. [edit] Research TipsThese two maps show the boundaries of the individual civil parishes in the county in 1900 and in 1944. Comparing the two on a local level allows one to understand the alterations (should there be any) which occurred during the interim period which are noted in the text above.
