Prestonmill lies on the Prestonmill Burn which rises on Craigtappock, a summit of the Criffel massif. The village of Kirkbean is nearly 2 miles (3 km) to the northeast.

Prestonmill was located in the parish of Kirkbean in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
