Kirkbean Village lies at the southeastern foot of Criffell (569m or 1867 feet), 5 miles (8 km) south of the village of New Abbey. A largely 19th Century estate village for Arbigland to the southeast, Kirkbean was the birthplace of John Paul Jones (1747-1792), founder of the US Navy. The father of John Paul Jones was head gardener at Arbigland Gardens.

Kirkbean was located in the parish of Kirkbean in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
