The parish of Paddington, on which this registration district was based, was located to the north of the parish of Westminster and to the west of the parish of Marylebone. The registration district was formed out of part of the geographically very large Kensington Registration District which had originally covered all of the western suburbs of London located in Middlesex. The initial population of the registration district was more than 107,000 based on the census of 1881.

Paddington Registration District continued to function through the time of the County of London (1889-1965) and from 1965 as part of Greater London until 1977 when the parishes (or metropolitan boroughs) of Marylebone, Paddington and Westminster (which together had become the London Borough of Westminster in 1965) joined their registration districts.

These alterations are covered in full in the UKBMD review of Paddington Registration District.
