The Newton Abbot Rural District was located southwest of Exeter and was comprised of 31 civil parishes surrounding the Urban District of Newton Abbot. It was in existence from 1894 until 1974. It replaced the earlier Newton Abbot Rural Sanitary District which had catered for the area's needs during the latter part of the 19th century. In 1974 the area covered by the rural district became part of the current non-metropolitan Teignbridge District which also serves

Newton Abbot,
the former urban districts of Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Dawlish, Teignmouth, and
the eastern part St. Thomas Rural District.

Because of their location near Torquay which had become the centre of Torbay Unitary Authority, in 1974 the parishes of Coffinswell (#10) and Kerswells (#17) were transferred to the borough of Torbay rather than to Teignbridge District.
