Village of New Harlem

New Harlem, or Nieuw Haerlem in the Dutch language, was historically a village in New Netherland and also later in the province of New York.

History

On 4 March 1658, in a meeting in Fort Amsterdam, the Director-General and Council of New Netherland gave notice of a resolution to form a new village. The preliminary work of surveying and staking out the plots was completed between 14 August and 10 September following. The village was laid out adjoining the Great Kill or Harlem River, taking for the principal street an existing road or trail which touched the river (about 125th Street in modern times) just north of a small cove, where a ferry to Bronckside, or Morrisania, was soon established.
