John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870-72) described Murton like this:

"MORTON, an extra-parochial tract in Helmsley district, N. R. Yorkshire; 5½ miles NW of Helmsley. Pop., 34. Houses, 5." (source: A Vision of Britain through Time).

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Murton was part of Helmsley Rural District. Historically, it was an extra parochial place in the Birdforth Wapentake.
