Melmerby (#22 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the Richmondshire District of North Yorkshire, England. It lies in the Yorkshire Dales about 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Leyburn. Two neighbouring parishes are Carlton Town (#7) and Coverham with Agglethorpe (#11). The population of the civil parish was estimated at 40 in 2015.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Melmerby was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ancient and ecclesiastical parish of Coverham in the Hang West Wapentake.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"MELMERBY, a township in Coverham parish. [North Riding of] Yorkshire; near the river Cover, 4¼ miles SW of Leyburn [railway] station. Acres: 1,153. Real property: £850. Population: 123. Houses: 28."
