Manchester Township was formed from portions of Saddle River Township, Bergen County, New Jersey as a part of the 1837 formation of Passaic County. Around the turn of the 20th century it was subdivided into boroughs and portions were incorporated into Paterson City, and the township no longer exists.

The boroughs formed from Manchester Township were the following:

  • Totowa (formed 15 Mar 1898, also incorporating portions of Wayne Township)
  • Hawthorne (formed 24 Mar, 1898)
  • Prospect Park (formed 13 Mar, 1901)
  • North Haledon (formed 20 Mar 1901)
  • Haledon (created 8 Apr, 1908, abolishing Manchester Township)

A high school in the area, Manchester Regional High School, preserves the name.
