end of Wikipedia contribution

Maltby (near Rotherham) was originally an ancient parish in Strafforth and Tickhill Wapentake in the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1866 the status of civil parish was introduced and this was taken on by most ancient parishes and also by their subsidiary townships if they were of any size at all. In 1866 both Maltby and its township of Hooton Levett became civil parishes. In 1894 they each became part of the Rotherham Rural District of the West Riding.

In 1924 Maltby became an Urban District which was made up of its civil parish and one named Stainton Urban. (Source: A Vision of Britain through Time and this map). Since 1974 Maltby has been part of the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough in the administrative county of South Yorkshire.

The civil parishes represented by the numbers on the map will be found on the pages for Rotherham Rural District and Kiveton Park Rural District.
