The parish has a population of 269, increasing marginally to 271 at the 2011 Census. and is historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Stainton is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book. Stainton grew in the 19th century, providing homes for miners at Maltby. Stainton ecclesiastical parish is within the Diocese of Sheffield. The parish church of St. Winifred, a Grade II* listed building, dates from the 12th century. The current Stainton lord of the manor (as of 2015), is the 13th Earl of Scarbrough. Historically, Stainton (near Tickhill) was an ancient parish in the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill. It included a hamlet named Hellaby which was tranferred to Bramley civil parish in 1886. From 1894 Stainton was located in Doncaster Rural District. In 1924 the neighbouring civil parish of Maltby (near Rotherham) was made an urban district and Stainton was split into two civil parishes: Stainton (its more rural section) and Stainton Urban (redirected here) which joined Maltby Urban District. Since 1974 Stainton (near Tickhill) has been in the new administrative county of South Yorkshire, specifically within the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough.
