The Louisiana Purchase was 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River extending from its mouth to its headwaters to which the United States acquired claim on 30 Apr 1803 from France. The transfer took effect on 10 Mar 1804, and the area existed as a single entity until 1 Oct 1804 when it was subdivided into the Orleans Territory (which would become the State of Louisiana in 1812) and the Louisiana Territory (which would be renamed the Missouri Territory after Louisiana became a state).
