A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Llanmihangel from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"LLANMIHANGEL, or ST. MICHAEL, a parish in Bridgend [registration] district, Glamorgan; 2 miles SSW of Cowbridge [railway] station. Post town: Cowbridge. Acres: 586. Real property: £794. Population: 29. Houses: 4. Llanmihangel Place was the seat of Judge Franklin; and passed, through the Thomases, to the Earl of Dunraven. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Llandaff. Value: £142. Patron: the Earl of Dunraven."

Llanmichangel was a small parish in Cowbridge Rural District. It was bounded on the east by the parish of St. Mary Church, on the south by Llanmaes, on the west by Llantwit Major, and on the north by Llanblethian which surrounded Cowbridge.

Since 1996 it has been part of the County Borough of Vale of Glamorgan and part of the community (or civil parish) of Llanmaes.

Research Tips

  • GENUKI on Glamorgan Lots of leads to other sources and descriptions of former parishes.
  • The FamilySearch Wiki on Glamorgan has recently been updated (early 2016) and looks remarkably like Wikipedia. Their map "Glamorgan Parish Map.jpg" enlarges to show all the original parishes. The sub-section "Parishes of Historic Glamorgan" lists all the parishes of Glamorgan and the newer preserved counties and principal areas in both English and Welsh. (Currently this website is still under construction.)
