Township of Leavenworth

Leavenworth historically was a civil township situated in the east-central part of the county of Leavenworth, state of Kansas, United States of America.

History

Leavenworth was one of the five original civil townships erected at a meeting of the county commissioners on 7 September 1855 after the county was erected the preceding month.

Boundaries

The boundaries were originally defined:

Beginning at the warehouse at Fort Leavenworth, thence down the Missouri river to the mouth of Seven-mile creek; thence, on a line due west, to Stranger creek; thence up said creek to the crossing of the military road to Fort Riley; thence, along said road, east to the place of beginning.

It was gradually reduced in size until it was restricted to the limits of the city of Leavenworth, having an organization only so far as to retain the township offices of justices of the peace and constables, and with its government merged into that of the city.
