[edit] The village
Kilmonivaig (Scottish Gaelic: Cill Mo Naomhaig) is a small village, situated close to the southeast end of Loch Lochy now in the Scottish council area of Highland and prior to 1975 in Inverness-shire. Kilmonivaig is approximately 15 miles northeast of Fort William. [edit] The parishKilmonivaig is a parish located in Highland Council Area, some 13 miles (20 km) northeast of Fort William and 15 miles (25 km) southwest of Fort Augustus and includes a small offshore island. It stretches west and southeast from the Great Glen--the valley that continues southwest from the end of Loch Ness. It contains a hamlet named Laggan, but there is another settlement of the same name in the parish of Laggan, located immediately to the east. Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Inverness-shire, which was replaced by the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area. The parish has an area of 1120 sq. km (432.4 sq. miles). In addition to the village of Kilmonivaig, the parish includes the villages of Spean Bridge and Invergarry and the smaller settlements of Achluachrach, Bohenie, Bohuntine, Brackletter, Corrour, Inchlaggan, Laggan, Leckroy, Letterfinlay, Mandally, Murlaggan, Roybridge, Stronenaba, and Tulloch Station. For a 19th century description of the parish, see the description from The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland (1868) as transcribed and copyrighted by Colin Hinson and provided on the web by GENUKI.
