NOTE: There are two other places named Kildonan in Scotland. One is a settlement on the island of South Uist, now in the Western Isles Council Area; the other is a parish on the Isle of Arran in the former county of Bute, now in North Ayrshire Council Area. Kildonan is a Scottish parish which runs inland in a northwesterly direction from the North Sea at the town of Helmsdale. It is located in the Highland Council Area, 22 miles (36 km) northeast of Lairg. Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Sutherland, which was replaced by the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area. The parish has an area of 558.9 sq. km (215.8 sq. miles). As well as the town of Helmsdale it includes the settlements of Kinbrace, Achentoul, Altanduin, Kildonan, Navidale, Torrish and West Helmsdale. West Helmsdale and Navidale are "suburbs" of Helmsdale. The remainder of the settlements are spread up the River Helmsdale which is paralleled by a railway and a road. The Gazetteer for Scotland supplies a map of the parish. The hamlet of Kildonan is described by The Gazetteer for Scotland.
