Kexby is a village and civil parish now within the unitary authority of the City of York. It lies on the A1079 about 5 miles (8 km) east of York, on the River Derwent and the present border with the East Riding of Yorkshire. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 194.

Historically, Kexby was in the East Riding of Yorkshire and in the ecclesiastical parish of Catton (near Pocklington) in the wapentake of Harthill.

From 1894 until 1935, Kexby was located in Escrick Rural District (in the East Riding). In 1935 the Escrick Rural District was abolished and its place was taken by Derwent Rural District. At the same time Kexby parish absorbed the hamlet of Scoreby from the neighbouring parish of West Stamford Bridge with Scoreby.

Derwent Rural District administered the local area until the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974.

In 1974 the East Riding of Yorkshire became part of the county of Humberside and the border between the North Riding of Yorkshire and the new county was altered. Kexby found itself across the border in the county that had just been renamed North Yorkshire and was placed in the Selby District. In 1996, in another alteration of borders, the City of York, a unitary authority, expanded to include Kexby.
